Moving Older Parents: Get All Your Duct Tape In A Row:Tips On Using Boxes To Move Elderly Parents

Tips About Boxes When Moving Mom And Dad

I didn't start out being an expert on the topic of moving seniors, but I confess, I have become the go to person on this topic.  Not only do I have personal experience on the matter of moving, but  as editor of I Antique Online.com, I manage many group forums on this topic.

Helping Older Adults Downsize: Tips On Moving

If you follow my blogs (or rambles) you have probably already read some of my tales on older adults downsizing. Today I want to discuss BOXES.
When you get ready for the big day (it will come)...transitioning to a smaller apartment or to a Assisted Living facility or other type of residence, you almost always are going to be
taking belongings in both suitcases and boxes.

If you follow my blogs you know I adore     plastic boxes for moves in an assortment of sizes to use both for the move and to keep later for additional storage under a bed, in a closet or in a storage space. Another favorite type of box of mine are FREE empty cardboard boxes from a nearby Liquor store. These boxes which held bottles are very sturdy and small enough to be easy to handle. These can get dumped later!

Cardboard Liquor Boxes

Liquor boxes usually come with cardboard partitions inside. You want to have some with the partitions and some boxes without. The boxes with compartments are great for packing glassware, vases and other items that need a "cushion". The empty boxes work great for books, cleaning supplies and other odds and ends.

Tips On Marking And Securing Boxes When Moving

Now on the subject of TAPE and MARKING BOXES Do not be a fool, use good packing tape to fortify the bottoms of boxes and to seal when the boxes are packed. But my most important tip is to mark the box both on the top of the box and on one or more sides. Since
most movers stack boxes, it is so much easier to figure out what is inside when you can read your labels on one or more sides of the box!

Summer Campers At The Farmingnton Valley Arts Center Create Jackson Pollock Inspired Abstract Paintings

"Action Painting" At Farmington Valley Arts Center's Summer Camp

Campers attending the "Summer Arts Adventure For Kids Program" at The Farmington Valley Arts Center  (FVAC) in Avon, CT have created some rather amazing Jackson Pollock inspired abstract paintings. Pollock, was a major influence in the abstract expressionist movement.  In the late 1940s, Pollock developed the "drip and splash" style of applying paint.  Many of his pieces were set on the floor or on a wall where he used unconventional objects instead of paint brushes to drip paint and create what is known as "action paintings" .

About The Farmington Valley Arts Center

Take a look at these exciting paintings which were made by school age children last week at The Farmington Valley Arts Center, a non-profit center which is home to twenty artist studios, year rounds classes and workshops, a summer  arts program for children and adolescents, two galleries and a artisan gift shop.  For more information visit: http://artsfvac.org/

Readers, what do you think....are these amaizing for young children? BTW....this is not as easy as it looks.

Using Mixed Media Mid Century Inspired Collages To Display Vintage Costume Jewelry

Retro Displays For Old And Artist Made Jewelry

I'm always trying to think of neat ways to display jewelry in my shop Kitsch n Stuff in my booth at The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, CT
Over the weekend, I came up with yet another kitschy way to bring some life back to old costume or artisan made jewelry.

Cutting Up Old Collages For Jewelry Display

I went to my art studio and cut up pieces of my old Mid Century inspired abstract collages into small sections to use as cardboard backings for vintage brooches and earrings. Besides having a lot of fun with this project, I really think I created some eye catching presentation of vintage jewelry.

Readers, please share ideas that you have used to display old jewelry.

Off To The Beach With A Retro Canvas Mid Century Folding Chair

RETRO BEACH: Take Along Your Retro Folding Chairs

Retro folding beach chairs and picnic gear are very popular collectibles. That is why I always urge people who are out at a tag sale or estate sale to check out the garage, basement or storage shed of a home. Aluminum and webbed chairs from the 1950s as well as wooden armed and canvas beach chairs sell nicely if they are in good condition. Many people have these items tucked away in their homes in surprisingly good condition.

Sizing Up Condition of Old Beach Folding Chairs

When sizing up condition, check out the wood frame...is it splintering? rotted?  Is the canvas tightly stretched on the frame? Is the canvas faded? Are their any holes in the canvas. Does the chair smell from mildew? Is the canvas original or replaced?

I should add that I have even seen sellers taking off the canvas from a chair frame in poor condition and selling the colorful
canvas!

Question...if you came across the chair pictured, would you buy it and sell it or buy it and use it?
